Pompey are closing in on securing Conor Shaughnessy’s Fratton future, according to reports.

The Blues are set to tie the defender down to renewed terms, after his flying campaign at PO4 as John Mousinho’s side stormed to the League One title.

Shaughnessy was one of the surprise heroes of a never-to-be-forgotten campaign, after his arrival from Burton Albion 12 months ago.

The Republic of Ireland under-21 international sealed a two-year stay, with a club option to extend that agreement by 12 months.

Shaughnessy didn’t make Mousinho’s squad for the opening-day draw with Bristol Rovers at Fratton Park.

The 27-year-old played himself into contention, however, and went on to become a mainstay of Pompey’s defence as the campaign soared.

Shaughnessy’s stout defending and quality on the ball quickly established the centre-back as a popular figure with supporters.

The former Leeds United man also developed the habit of scoring key late goals, with stoppage-time winners against Wycombe and Carlisle.

Shaughnessy, of course, then stepped up with the goal which secured the League One crown in the 89th minute against Barnsley in April.

Now, according to Football Insider, talks are at an advanced stage over sealing new terms.
