Mark McMahon undertook the task for Pompey. Here’s what he came up with for a 4-4-2 formation.
Note: It’s harder than you think!
5. Centre-back: Matt Clarke (2018-19)
The popular centre-back had four memorable seasons at Fratton Park as he racked up 175 appearances for the club before his big-money move to Brighton. His selection could be based on any one of those campaigns, but we'll opt for his showing in the 2018-19 season. He made 60 appearances that season as he was crowned The News/Sports Mail Pompey player of the season. With both Rocha and Clarke at centre-back, it's worth mentioning the likes of Sean Raggett, Christian Burgess and Jack Whatmough, who unfortunately miss out.Photo: Joe Pepler/Digital South
6. Left-back: Enda Stevens (2015-16)
There's no doubt about it, the Irishman has been Pompey's best left-back over the past 11 seasons. With that said, we had to make room for him, no matter the cost. The now 32-year-old made 99 appearances for the Blues in his two years with the club, with 53 coming in his maiden term at PO4. Stevens was such a reliable player and fully deserved his move up the Football League ladder. Pompey lost out by failing to offer him a new contract, so he left on a free. What a mistake that was.Photo: Joe Pepler
7. Right-midfield - Jed Wallace (2014-15)
The shining light from the awful, awful 2014-15 season when the Blues posted a 16th-place finish in League Two! His 14 goals that season probably kept the Blues in the Football League. Another one, who we had to reluctantly saw goodbye to. Get's the nod to start on the right over Jamal Lowe, whose Pompey efforts should not be overlooked.Photo: Joe Pepler
8. Central midfield: Michael Doyle (2016-17)
Pompey's 2016-17 League Two title-winning captain. The Irishman wasn't Pompey best player that year, but his importance in the centre of the park was so important. Proved a shrewd bit of business by Paul Cook, who picked him up on a free transfer from central midfield. This 'XI from 11' team needs a bit of steel in the middle - and there's no-one better to provide that. Also, no other midfielder has quite had the same impact as Doyle, which is bad news for the likes of Gary Roberts, Kal Naismith and Christian Burgess, who were also big players for the Blues that memorable season and miss out on this team selection.Photo: Joe Pepler
