CITY activists will be calling for a change to what is considered the 'new normal' after the pandemic, during a silent, socially distanced protest.

The Portsmouth branch of Extinction Rebellion will take to Guildhall Square at midday on Saturday, May 30 as part of a nationwide event.

Along with other groups holding protests in cities such as London, and Birmingham they are asking for a citizens' assembly to manage the 'recovery' from Covid-19.

Extinction Rebellion holds bike ride in Portsmouth

One of the co-ordinators of Portsmouth XR, Selma Heimedinger, said: 'It’s becoming more and more evident each day that the government isn’t capable of getting us out of the coronavirus mess, or preparing us for future crises.

'They are more concerned with getting us back to “normal” as rapidly as possible. And the coronavirus has shown us what’s possible when the political will is there.

'Everything can change. Although there might not be a clear way out of either of these two huge disasters, we know one thing for sure: there can be no going back to the way things were.'

Protesters are being asked to wear masks and gloves where possible and will stand at least three metres apart.

Southsea based Selma, 20, added: 'We believe as a group Portsmouth City Council should keep the roads closed to cars as everyone seems to benefit. But I think they can definitely do more.

'Three roads in the centre of the city have now closed to cars and it's lovely when you're on your bike. It means we've got the space to actually socially distance.

'The theme of this protest is about deciding together. So we will be thinking about whether people want car free roads or more cycle lanes.

'But we know this isn't just about the environment, the recovery process will involve so much more, there are other issues such as funding the NHS.'

The protest is expected to last an hour an will take place in Guildhall Square opposite the civic offices. Non-Extinction Rebellion members are invited to join in.
