CONTROL room staff at Hampshire police have spilled the beans on some of the most ridiculous 999 calls they have taken in the past year.

Hampshire Constabulary released a video as part of International Control Room Week, which is meant to celebrate the work of emergency services call handlers.

But Hampshire police has given a stark message about time-wasting calls that are clearly not for emergency services.

The first operator in the video talks about a woman who wanted advice on stopping a smoke alarm.

The second example was of a bird that had entered a family home '“ with the final story looking at a man who had phoned up about a dodgy burger.

The operator said: '˜A man called 999 to say that he wasn't happy with the quality of his burger in a restaurant, and he wanted the police to come out and deal with the chef.

'˜We didn't, obviously.'

Hampshire police said it has received an '˜unprecedented' number of 999 calls this year.

The force said 999 calls should only be made under the following circumstances:

:: A danger to life.

:: A crime is happening now (or has just happened).

:: Immediate safety concerns.

:: A dangerous motorway incident.

:: Something suspicious that requires immediate attention.

All non-emergency incidents should be dealt with by calling 101.
