University of Portsmouth unveils spring programme to help local business sector

Fresh ideas, real impact
If you are a small or medium-sized business with a project that has the potential to impact your organisation’s growth or success, you can leverage our students' knowledge and skills through a Business Consultancy Project.
Business Consultancy Projects (BCPs) are a great way for businesses to get support with a project they don't have the time or capacity for.
You’ll work with a team of three or four students who will do independent research and come up with a solution to the brief you have provided.
We are hosting a BCP Application Clinic for businesses on 17 April from 12 to 1.30pm at the University Learning Centre for a hands-on session where you can get personalised help with your application.
Our team of expert tutors will be on hand to guide you through writing a suitable project brief, answer any questions you may have, and ensure that your application is ready to submit.
Whether you're a first-time applicant or just need a refresher, this clinic is the perfect opportunity to fine-tune your BCP submission.
A light buffet lunch will be provided and you will have a chance to network with other businesses interested in taking part in this year's Business Consultancy Projects.

Major funding boost to launch new degree apprenticeships
The University of Portsmouth has won an award of £669,704 from the Office for Students (OfS) to launch four new degree apprenticeships in September 2025.
The new apprenticeships, launching with 18 to 30 starters on each programme, will include:
· Registered Nurse
· Diagnostic Radiographer
· Paramedic
This latest announcement follows a £272,000 OfS funding award in January 2024 to launch the following three apprenticeships in September 2024 with 15 to 30 starters on each programme including:
· Operating Department Practitioner
The funding from January will also be used to redesign learning materials for the existing one-year top up Manufacturing Engineer degree apprenticeship.
With 17 different apprenticeships in its portfolio, the University currently has over 700 live apprentices enrolled: an incredible increase from just 7 in 2016 which demonstrates the appeal of undertaking a degree apprenticeship programme.
Last year, the University’s degree apprenticeship provision achieved the top rating in two of the three areas in which it was inspected when Ofsted conducted a New Provider Monitoring Visit.

Professor wins national accounting and finance award
Professor Lisa Jack has won the 2023 British Accounting & Finance Association's Distinguished Academic Award.
Professor Jack, from the School of Accounting, Economics and Finance in the Faculty of Business and Law was recognised for her “substantial and direct contribution to UK academic accounting and finance life”.
This is the 30th year of the award and Professor Jack is only the seventh female recipient to be given the accolade.
Professor Jack said: “I am overwhelmed to be offered this very great honour by the BAFA, especially in the year that the annual conference is being hosted by the University of Portsmouth.
“I am grateful to the University, and to my previous employers in higher education - University of Essex and Writtle University College - and indeed, to my family, for providing supportive environments in which my own ideas can flourish and have an impact beyond academia. I look forward to continuing my work in the coming years.”
Professor Jack will be presented with her award during this year’s BAFA Conference, which is being hosted by the University of Portsmouth, at the Annual Dinner in The Guildhall in Portsmouth on 9 April 2024.
